We planned a trip to Malysia and flew from Amsterdam to KualaLumpur with Singapore airlines.
This means we have to switch planes in Singapore. We booked our ticket direct on the website of singapore airlines and bought a oneway tickets. As a norwegian or Dutch we do not need visa for malaisia and are granted a stay of max 90 days there. This will mean we will see what to do then, Singapore, thailand and Indonesia are nearby. To get to the center of Kuala Lumpur the easiest way is to take The KLIA express or KLIA transit The KLIA express brings you nonstop to the KL city air station (KLCAT) at KL sentral station wich is right in the center of Kuala Lumpur. From there you can take lots of other train / light rail or monorail lines to your place of destination or a short taxi ride to where you wanna be. In Kuala Lumpur we rent a room at the Heritage station Hotel, a low budget hotel who has cheap monthly rates. We pay RM 950 for a months rent (comes extra 50 for tv and 50 for refrigerator so total RM 1050 ( 1 euro is a about RM 4,77 or 1 ringit is about 1.85 NOK (Norwegian Kroner ) (nov 2006) Its placed in the old KL station "A delightful example of colonial whimsy designed by British architect AB Hubbock a moorish fantasy of spires, minarets, topwers, cupolas and arches" (Lonely Planet guide to Malaysia) We decide to get ourselves a malaisian simcard for our mobile phones. We decide for DIGI prepaid. its a RM 18 startfee and uploads are available on every streetcorner plus allso possible via creditcard. digi is allso supposed to have coverage in all of Malaysia. they have low rates to other countrys for ex. to netherlands an norway it is only 38sen/min !!!!! (nov 2006) For internet access we find a very good option. As we carry our own laptop and want to do all our stuff from that laptop (security) we find out that celcom has a lot of "tmnet wifi hotspot" places all over Malaysia and the monthly fee is only RM28. Do not make the mistake we made and buy a tmnet "hotspot startup" take care not to buy a tmnet "hotspot reload" because you cannot start with that! later on you can use a tmnet "hotspot reload" card you get the starup and reload cards at the 7/11 shops who are open 24h a day 7 days a week they printout a slip with the serial number and security code with wich you can create an account on tmnet and have your first 30 days internet access. You can allso purcase access online at the wifi spot via your credit card. but in our case that failed! after filling in all our creditcard info it went right back to the startup screen. An initial phonecall to tmnet did not give any help and a second one gave us that it was probably something with too high security settings on our pc.... (yeah ofcourse we want to do a credit card transaction...) So i think your safest bet is the 7/11 (this worked for us after we found out that we needed the startup....) To get around in Kuala Lumpur we buy a monthly Travel card of (MTC) with wich we can travel with both the LRT lightrail lines for RM90 (Keep in mind that the monthly travel cards start at every first of a month and end at the last day, so if you buy it halfway a month you have only half a month left on it) (You can get a combination with the rapid KL bus and feeder bus systen for an extra RM35) So now we are all set and done for the next month Kuala Lumpur! |
