Tips & tricks for using the Garmin etrex vista hcx hand held gps receiver.
Sunday, 04 November 2007
Since shortly,i have a Garmin etrex vista hcx hand held gps receiver.
After my Magellan explorist 210 broke down completely, i decided not to get a magellan again.
I am somewhat dissapointed in the mechanical strength of the magellan device, thats one reason. Another reason was Garmin has now the hcx version in its Etrex series which has a new chip that is much more sensitive.
(I now receive over 6 satelites in our basement situated apartment, which with the magelan i was happy if i had one...)
And.. it gives me the opportunity to be able to use the other brand.
I started with setting up the device for my needs right away and
soon found out that a lot of things can be done in a lot of different ways.
As it was quit some work to find out how to use the device to fit my needs,
i've written down what i did in order for others to maybe  profit of it.

Setting up quality of service (qos) on a thomson modem for a ip (voip) phone modem
Tuesday, 19 June 2007
I noticed that while i was calling with my ip phone (a small modem box from telio called sipura) some times the person on the other side of the line complained about bad quality and breaking up of my voice. While i could hear the person i called clearly the other side experienced a bad line.
I then found out that this was actually only happening while somebody on the network was using a p2p program.
This made me realise that the p2p upload connection competed with my voice connection.

So i  to see if it was possible to get some kine of quality of service (qos) working on my ADSL modem.
I made some changes in the speedtouch in order to get a better ip phone line quality while using p2p programs.
As qos works with priorities i wanted to

Mekong River Trip to Luang Prabang
Friday, 16 February 2007
We wanted to go to Laos and the town of Luang Prabang from the Chang Rai district (golden triangle Northern Thailand) and did some research regarding the boat trips down the Mekong River from the area.

We found out that the fast ferry was both dangerous and probably stopped by the Laos authorities (speedboats with four to six  wearing earplugs and helmets!!!) and that the slow ferry was a two days trip usually overcrowded and not very nice, the place to sleep on the way had monopoly and the state of the guesthouse was according to this; bad we were told. Then by luck we found an alternative. By going to

The DTAC experience
Friday, 16 February 2007
Hmm if you want to  buy a prepaid simcard in Thailand at least from DTAC you better be able to read Thai. That is because you will get a sms asking you if it is ok to give your number to some news businesses that will then send you an sms every hour 24/7 in Thai about something, news I guess. This you of course pay for so the bath is going of your card fast.

Friday, 12 January 2007
5.th. Of J anuary  Gapang Beach Pulau Weh

The long awaited but also feared first dive in tropical waters (sharks there you
know!!) is over. It was a success.

Never knew it would be so much easier to dive in a wetsuit compared to a dry
suit, I only wish that the bottle (aluminum) would stop pulling me up. ;-D.

The water was nice and warm 28 degrees.

We made an easy first dive…straight out from the
